Can Dog Food Affect Behavior? You Bet It Can.

When it comes to dog behavior, most people focus on training methods, exercise, or environment—and those are all important. But there’s one major factor that often gets overlooked:šŸ‘‰ What your dog is eating.

Yes, dog food can absolutely impact your dog’s mood, energy levels, focus, and even anxiety or aggression.

🧠 Food = Fuel for the Brain

Just like in people, a dog’s brain needs the right balance of nutrients to function properly. If the food is poor-quality, packed with fillers, or missing key components, it can lead to:

  • Hyperactivity

  • Lethargy

  • Trouble focusing

  • Increased anxiety

  • Even behavior that looks like aggression

Think about how kids act after eating a bunch of sugar. Now imagine a dog eating that every day and not being able to tell you what’s wrong!

🚫 Some of the Worst Dog Foods on the Market

Not all dog food is created equal. In fact, some popular brands contain so many dyes, by-products, fillers, and artificial ingredients that they barely qualify as nutrition.

Here are some of the worst offenders:

  • Kibbles 'n Bits

  • Moist & Meaty

  • Ol' Roy (Old Yeller)

  • Gravy Train

  • Beneful

  • Pedigree (some formulas)

Why are these considered low-quality?

āŒ Artificial dyes (like Red 40, Yellow 5, and Blue 2)āŒ Meat by-products and unnamed "meat meals"āŒ Corn, soy, and wheat as primary ingredientsāŒ High sugar contentāŒ Chemical preservatives like BHA and BHT

These types of ingredients do nothing to nourish your dog and can actually amplify behavioral issuesĀ like hyperactivity, poor impulse control, and even aggression or anxiety.

🄫 Is Wet Food Any Better?

Not necessarily.

While canned or wet food may seem appealing—especially to picky eaters—there are several downsides to relying on it as your dog’s main diet:

  • High Water Content:Ā Wet food is often over 70% water, which means your dog gets less actual nutritionĀ per bite.

  • Low Chew Value:Ā It doesn’t promote healthy chewing habits, which can contribute to plaque buildup and dental problemsĀ over time.

  • Messier Feeding & Storage:Ā It spoils faster, can be messy, and is harder to use for training.

  • Can Encourage Pickiness:Ā Because it's often highly palatable, some dogs will begin to refuseĀ healthier kibble or raw options after eating wet food.

Wet food might be okay occasionally or in special circumstances (like senior dogs or post-surgery recovery), but it’s not ideal as a long-term, primary diet—especially for growing or working dogs.

šŸ– What to Look for in a Good Dog Food

When choosing a food, keep these basics in mind:

  • Protein First: Meat should be the first ingredient

  • No artificial dyes or preservatives

  • Low fillers: Avoid foods with corn, wheat, or soy as the main ingredients

  • Healthy fats: Omega-3s help brain function and reduce inflammation

  • Probiotics & Fiber: These support gut health, which is directly tied to mood and behavior

At Endless Pawsibilities, we’ve seen major improvements in dogs’ focus and progress during training once they’re switched to a better diet.

😬 Warning Signs of a Food-Behavior Connection

Here are a few behavioral red flags that could be linked to diet:

  • Sudden bursts of energy (aka ā€œzoomiesā€) after meals

  • Struggling to calm down or settle

  • Digestive issues paired with irritability

  • Difficulty focusing during training

  • Skin issues or excessive licking (can contribute to stress)

Sometimes the fix isn’t more training—it’s better nutrition.
